The European Science Foundation (ESF) within the EUROMARC program initiated the project "RETRO" which has achieved a lot during the last three years, completing three marine research expeditions and collection of high quality research material. Many people and institution deserve sincere thanks for their support: The National funding agencies in Norway (RCN), the Netherlands (NWO), Germany (DFG), and France (INSU/CNRS).
The first RETRO expedition (site survey cruise) off Brazil was supported by the Marine Research Institute in Norway, and performed on the Research vessel G.O.Sars. The second expedition off Namibia, and the third expedition off Northern Brazil were performed on the research vessel Marion Dufresne. Additional funding for the RETRO - III expedition to the western Atlantic Ocean was given by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche (contract number ANR-09-BLAN-0347-01).
RETRO coring cruises on R/V Marion Dufresne were supported by the French Institute Paul Emilie Victor (IPEV). We are grateful for all the support by ship organizers and crew members on all these cruises. Also, the many scientists and students working on the ship during these cruises have been very important for the success of these cruises. Finally we wish to thank Paulo Guimares for his help with obtaining the working permits. We are very grateful for the funding, help and support we received, without this we would not have been able to complete the project.
